One hundred years ago, on 10 September 1910 in a Hampshire field, a 27- year-old mechanical engineer called Geoffrey de Havilland successfully flew an aircraft of his own design and construction. It was the first of 46,000 D.H.aircraft made in de Havilland factories during the following half century. The companies which he led also designed and manufactured thousands of piston engines and jets, propellers, missiles and rockets. They were responsible for more aeronautical engineering innovation than any other company in the world before or since.. Mike Ramsden tells the story of the brilliant self-effacing man who founded and led the de Havilland World Enterprise.
