Membership: Fellowship
 

Fellowship (FRAeS) is the highest grade attainable and is only bestowed upon those in the profession of aeronautics or aerospace who have achieved one of the following:

  • Made outstanding contributions
  • Attained a position of high responsibility
  • Have had long experience of high quality

To upgrade from MRAeS to FRAeS, or to apply for it if you have not yet joined the Society, please visit Applying for Membership. Below are examples of the levels of responsibility appropriate for Fellowship (please note they are for guidance only and are to be reviewed in spring 2010):

Academia: Professor, Reader, Director of major aeronautical training organisation, Outstanding university Principal or Senior Lecturer, Outstanding Senior Research Fellow

Design & Manufacture: General Manager, Chief Engineer or Project Director for aircraft, weapons systems or major subsystems, Head of specialist function in major organisation, Budget over £50M, Over 500 staff

Logistics, maintenance & repair: General Manager, Manager of major overhaul facility, Head of specialist function in major organisation, Budget over £50M, Over 500 staff

Operations & training: General Manager, Senior management in major aviation company, Chief test pilot in major aircraft company, Fleet Operations Manager, Training Captain or Route Check Captain in major airline, Captain of aircraft over 25 tonnes for 10 years, Senior management in major aviation company; Training Captain in a major airline, training organization or business jet operation, Captain of multi-crew turbine powered aircraft for 10 years

CAA: Members of CAA Senior Management Group including Professional and Technical Managers, Head of Department and Head of Section, Level 1 Surveyors, Level 1 ATCO

Professional support: Outstanding contributions or a position of high responsibility, or long experience of high quality in an aerospace context in a field such as: Medicine, law, human resources & training, finance, sales & marketing and media

Heritage: Outstanding contribution in the field of Aerospace Heritage

Armed services: Captain RN, Colonel, Group Captain, Air Crew or Engineers of the rank Commander RN or equivalent who are appointed Integrated Project Team Leaders or have commanded front line operational units

R&D: Head of Department or Division, QinetiQ Level 7 and above (Divisional Director; QinetiQ Fellow, and Senior Fellow), Principal Inspector of Accidents, Rolls-Royce Professional (P3) / Manager (M3)

Please note, before you submit your application form you will need the names of Fellows of the Society to add to the application form. 

If you are unable to find Fellows of the Society, you may use Fellows of other professional institutions. Where this is the case, you should include a letter of explanation.

The Society has a Grading Committee of membership experts and they are responsible for deciding which grade is most appropriate for you and this is based on the information in the application form. Below are the dates when we need to receive the form and when the Committee meets:

If your application is successful, Council is asked to consider the recommendation so it might take a month of so after the committee meeting before we can give you news. If you are unsuccessful, we will write to you with any feedback from the committee together with details of the appeals procedure.
