UK aircraft industry mergers, 1957-62
Professor Keith Hayward, head of research at the Society, is currently preparing a history of the aircraft industry mergers, 1957-62, focusing on the interplay between the Government and the leading companies culminating in the formation of BAC and Hawker Siddeley Aviation. This is the first archive-based study of the rationalisation process. Professor Hayward has consulted the National Archive at Kew, the Caldecote Papers (English Electric), the de Havilland papers at the RAF Museum and the Vickers Archive at Cambridge University. He has also been provided with some documentation from the Handley Page Society. Professor Hayward would be particularly interested in information concerning the location of other Board level documents, particularly for the Hawker Siddeley Group. An early ‘work-in-progress’ version of this paper is available here. Professor Hayward would be interested in any comments or memories of these events. The final, illustrated version of this paper should be available in the summer. Professor Hayward gave a lecture to the Historical Group at No.4 Hamilton Place on 2 April 2009, entitled; “‘Offers they couldn't refuse’ — mergers in the British aircraft industry, 1957-62”.
