Aerospace Partnership
Aerospace demands the highest standards of professionalism
and the ever increasing competitive pressures to achieve world class performance are
bringing renewed emphasis on the need for professional development on the part of
aerospace practitioners of all disciplines. The professional institutions have a
responsibility to respond to this need in a coordinated manner and indeed play a vital
role in the development of all disciplines involved.
The Aerospace Partnership has been formed from the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), the Institution
of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). It aims
to harmonise the various strengths of the constituent Institutions in devising and
implementing their programmes of activities in support of the aerospace community. This
will encompass such activities as conferences, lectures, courses, information services,
publications and public affairs. The harmonisation process will aim to avoid conflict or
duplication of events, to promote joint ventures wherever this is advantageous and to
maximise the visibility of such activities to the widest possible audience.
Below are the co-sponsored events from the IET, the IMechE and other organisations.

Airworthiness: We Are Only Human
18 November 2008
Armada House, Bristol
Advances in aircraft technologies affecting design, materials, systems and maintenance philosophies have reaped significant
improvements in aircraft efficiency, reliability and safety. The largest cause of incidents and accidents continues to be attributed to
human factors (HF). All branches of the aerospace industry have attempted to address the human issue in different ways, some
with more success than others. This event will explore the challenge of engineering the defences against human error.

Towards Sustainable Aviation Propulsion
19 November 2008
Armada House, Bristol
At the time of the event, 40% of the time allocated for Aviation
to achieve the voluntary targets set out in the ACARE 2020 framework will have elapsed. This
symposium will explore the developments which aircraft propulsion systems have made towards
the overall targets to date.
Focusing specifically on the global public concern of global warming via increased carbon
dioxide emissions, the event will present developments towards higher thermal and propulsive
efficiency propulsion systems.

MoD Director Equipment Capability (Theatre Airspace) Capability Event
Monday 17th November 2008
London, UK
The Director of Equipment Capability -Theatre Airspace (DEC TA) will be
hosting an Industry day in London on Monday 17th November. Air Commodore Sean Bell took over
the post of Director at the beginning of August 2008 and this will be an opportunity for him
to introduce himself to industry and provide an insight to what his priorities are. Fresh
from his 9 month post in Kabul where he operated with the International Stabilisation and
Assistance Force, the DEC will outline his operational credentials and confirm his
commitment to getting the right kit to our troops at the right time at the right price.
This will be a full day event with opportunities for informal discussions with the Air
Commodore and his staff at lunch and the drinks reception. Those wishing to attend should
contact Tracey Higgs on 01428 602614 or email t.higgs@the-dma.org.uk
The Second Century for UK Aerospace
Monday 8th - Tuesday 9th December 2008
London, UK
As UK Aerospace enters its Second Century this conference has been
called by SBAC and Cityforum to examine how to maximise the prospects for one of the two
remaining high tech manufacturing sectors where Britain maintains a globally competitive
level of performance.
The agenda pays equal attention to the civil and defence sectors. While emphasising the
national context as is appropriate to a centenary event, the programme for this conference
is set in global terms with a thorough examination of the challenges to its future from
foreign competition. The size and shape of markets is bound to be affected by the turbulent
events currently taking place in the international economy. The consequences of these
developments feature in the December 8/9 discussions.

SESAR and Future ATM Development Projects
Friday 12th December 2008 - 08:30hrs to 14:00hrs
RAF Club, Piccadilly, London, UK
This breakfast, forum and luncheon will serve as the finale to the
ATM KN’s efforts in 2008 by providing an opportunity for UK industry and academia to be
updated on and focus upon the large development projects driving forward ATM today.
The political and technical dimensions of the project will both be explored, including
how SESAR is changing ATM to create the Single European Sky and what new
technology will be required to deliver it.

TranSec World Expo
3 - 4 June 2009
RAI Amsterdam
TranSec World Expo celebrates its 7th year with a fresh new look
and expanded conference programme. Aviation, Maritime, Supply Chain and Mass Transit
security are the key focus areas over a two-day event at the RAI in Amsterdam.
The Madrid, London and Mumbai terrorist attacks present enormous challenges to the security
industry in striving to help safeguard high throughput mass transit systems. TranSec World
Expo 2009 will bring the leading technologists and thinkers together in two days of informed
debate on this and other pressing issues within the transport arena.
Principal themes for TranSec World Expo 2009 include protecting passengers and cargo from
international terrorism, organised crime including drug trafficking and people smuggling and
the threat presented by weapons of mass destruction.
TranSec World Expo 2009 conference and specialist workshops will be held against a backdrop
of the world’s leading exhibitors of the very latest technologies in the security sphere.

Engine as a Weapon III
Tuesday 23 – Wednesday 24 June 2009
Action Stations, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, UK
Future maritime platforms will need to provide a seamless delivery of military effect,
where highly integrated systems all contribute to the mission. In the specific case of marine engineering this has been termed:
“from fuel tank to target”. The modern submarine is a potent example of this level of integration, considered by some to be the most
sophisticated and highly integrated military system ever produced it provides a holistic response to threats. But historically surface
warships have developed from a different perspective. With their more general-purpose role, they have tended to carry combat systems that
act almost outside the realm of the platform in order to respond to the ever changing threats. But now electrification of platform and
propulsion systems is continuing ever more quickly and as a result greater integration and system interdependence is not just inevitable
but absolutely essential if the surface warships’ vital roles in maritime warfare are to continue. Surface ships must now be designed in
the same way as submarines have been; that is: from a perspective of total integration so that it is not just from fuel tank to target but
from every other asset to target in concert.
