Airlines to bring in new transatlantic baggage fees
Air passengers face fare increases as a number of airlines add new charges for checking in more than one bag.
A number of American carriers have announced they are to start charging economy class passengers for a second piece of luggage on transatlantic flights.
The $50 levy is being imposed in the coming months by American Airlines, Continental, Delta and US Airways.
British Airways, who recently attacked no-frills carriers for their hidden costs are to charge up to £40 for a second bag from early October. BA has also announced that sporting equipment, such as skis, will now form part of the baggage allowance. This means anyone carrying a suitcase as well as their sports equipment will have to pay an extra £40 for their sporting equipment. BA is also raising the levy on heavy luggage over 23kg from £25 to £30.
Virgin Atlantic is also imposing a limit from late September but only to some of its destinations, and will be charging £35 for a second bag to these locations.
