Medals and Awards The Royal Aeronautical Society has been honouring outstanding achievers in the global aerospace industry since 1908, when Wilbur and Orville Wright came to London to receive the Society’s first two Gold Medals. In the years that have followed, honouring world aerospace achievers has become a permanent tradition of the Society. The Society’s Awards Programme has rewarded individuals who have made an exceptional contribution to aerospace. Whether it be for a single outstanding contribution or achievement, a major technical innovation, for exceptional leadership, long and valued service, or for work that will further advance aerospace.
For details about the NEW Aerospace Speakers Travel Grants (AeSTG) which replace the Royal Aeronautical Society's Educational Awards for 2005. These are aimed at, but not exclusive to, young people at the start of their aerospace careers, planning to present a paper on their research to an audience of their peers at a conference, but lacking the funds to do so. A typical size of an award can be up to £500. This section also talks about the Ian Chisholm Memorial Prize for Under 19s, held in October each year, and other sources of support for young people seeking funding to support aerospace-related activities.
The Royal Aeronautical Society's tribute to the whole achievement of the first century of powered flight has been to create a new Centennial Scholarship Fund with the ability to give financial assistance to those who have the ability and determination to make a significant contribution to the 2nd century of powered flight but lack the means to do so. In particular, the fund aims to help individuals struggling to complete aerospace-related studies and groups or organisations aiming to promote aerospace and engineering study and careers to young people.
